The Kids and their House

The beneficiaries of the Silid Pangarap Project are the kids of Asociacion de Damas Filipinas.

Asociacion de Damas Filipinas is a settlement house founded in 1913. It serves as a temporary shelter to infants and children who have been neglected or abandoned, or whose parents are unable to provide sufficient care. It offers its assistance to children ages 6 months to 6 years, but extends its help to children beyond 6 years on a case-to-case basis. Because of the nature of the service it provides, the number of children living at the settlement house varies throughout the year.

Asociacion de Damas Filipinas currently houses 14 children (4 girls, 6 boys), ages 2 to 10. It also provides daycare classes to its children and those living in neighboring communities. For the coming school year, 8 kids will be attending the daycare program offered by  Damas Filipinas, while 6 kids will be attending elementary at a nearby public school.

There is already a library at the settlement house, generously donated by a private corporation. The library is furnished with a computer, and is accessible to the children on Saturdays, for morning activities organized for the kids.

For this project, we will be upgrading the viewing room, which is occasionally used by the kids to watch television, so that it will also be conducive for leisure reading.

We will  be making arrangements with the orphanage so that the kids will be allowed frequent access to the Fiction Library. We hope to devise a child-friendly borrowing system so that the kids would be able to borrow books that they can read to bed, before sleep, or read in their awesome playground, or anywhere they wish, whenever they feel like it.

Ideally, in a year's time, we'll be seeing children all over their house, lying on the slide, sitting by the trees, enjoying their private time, imagining new worlds and adventures.
